MOVING FROM PS/2 TO USB
USING AN I-PAC 2 OR 4
We receive questions about
this many times per week so here is some
information.
The
first point is that all I-PACs are "proper" USB devices. This means you
do not need to convert the protocol to USB. The I-PAC detects the type
of interface its connected to at power on, and switches to one of two
internal firmware modules to operate in USB or PS/2 mode.
Despite
the above, if you already have a device which converts PS/2
into USB protocol such
as the one below, can you continue to run the I-PAC in PS/2 mode with
this device converting the protocol?
The
answer is NO. These converters wont work for gaming for the following
reasons:
- They
cancel all
keypresses every 2-3 seconds to avoid stuck USB keys
- They
are slow
- They
will only allow 6
keypresses
The
only way to run an I-PAC in USB
mode is the way we originally designed it to run. This is as a proper
USB device which is sending USB data to the PC. The way to do this is
to connect via a cable which does no conversion. There are two options
here:
You can order the cable we supply. Select the USB cable here
The other method which MAY work is to buy an adaptor plug which looks
like this:
This used to be a 100% reliable method but in the past few months we
have heard of some of these adaptors being supplied with a different
pinout
(the 2 signal wires swapped) so not all of these will work
unfortunately.
The
pinout of the cable is below:
